SOUTHWARK
ENGINE Co. 38 - 28 Ann St.
Organized February 10, 1840.

Engine 38 was nicknamed the "Bible Savers," because of their work to
save the buildings of the American Bible Society when fire broke out at
the adjacent Park Theatre in 1848.
In 1840, the company purchased the department's first "double-decker"
engine, which had been built in the Southwark district of Philadelphia,
hence its name.
