MAZEPPA
HOSE Co. 42 - 33rd St. & 9th Av.
Organized October 12, 1848.
William Timms, serving in Company A of the Zouaves, is credited with
capturing the first flag of secession for the regiment. On September
10, 1862, a fire broke out under the staircase in the
quarters of his fire company, Mazeppa Hose. Timms was present at
the time and held a rope out the rear
window while other members used it to climb to safety. Once all were
out, Timms had no one to hold the rope for him, so he took his chances
and escaped down the burning stairs.
John Coyle was foreman of this company, and became Captain of Company A.
